It was named after a Byzantine landowner of the area called Konteas. The old stone mansions of the shipowners of the 19th and 20th centuries were renovated and today either host their descendants or have been converted into tourist accommodation for visitors. At the eastern entrance of the village there are tall green plane trees, which were planted in 1912 with the liberation of Lemnos from the Turks.

At the western entrance you are welcomed by the pine-covered hill with the chapel of Agios Athanasios and the beautiful picturesque windmills, a trademark of the village.

In the village there is also the Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art, with a large collection of paintings by recognized artists, while scattered throughout the village there are several churches, the oldest of which is that of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, which is estimated to have been built in the 16th century. The parish church is dedicated to Agios Dimitrios and was built in 1867.
